Annual Tall Screen Mix
Deer Blind is our screen mix that can grow 15-18 feet tall.
Deer Blind is great for hunters and wildlife enthusiasts to screen a food plot from roads and neighbors, or to create a safe alley to get to their hunting stand unnoticed by wildlife.
Planting Time:
Late May through early August
Seeding Rate:
10 pounds covers 1/4 – 1/2 acre
Ingredients:
2120 Forage Sorghum, Sorghum Sudangrass, Egyptian Wheat, Grain Sorghum, Sunn Hemp
Notes on varieties:
– 2120 Forage Sorghum – a stout forage sorghum that can get to 10-12 feet tall; has sugarcane parentage, so it stands long into the winter and is harder to freeze; it comprises 50% of this mix and helps hold the Egyptian Wheat up
– CISCO SS 340 Sorghum Sudangrass – can get 6-8 feet tall and has a sturdy stalk to stand up strong
– Egyptian Wheat – a type of sorghum that can get 15-18 feet tall; thin stalked and tends to blow over and lay flat if planted alone
– Grain Sorghum – will get about 4 feet tall and has a very strong stalk
– Sunn Hemp – a quick-growing, fast-dying legume to help feed all of these grasses some nitrogen, while also providing a little color with their yellow flowers
All of these species together make a thick screen from the ground to the top. Some might argue that grain sorghum and sunn hemp are food sources – and that deer will knock the screen down. However, there is not enough here to cause any issues; we’ve never experienced this problem.
