Planting Time:
May through August
Seeding Rate:
5 pounds covers 1/2 acre
Ingredients:
Sugar Beets, Forage Turnip, Purple Top Turnip, Sunn Hemp, Twister Brassica, Bayou Kale
Notes on varieties:
– Sugar Beets – quick-growing brassica that provides great grazing for deer in the fall; preferred in grazing mixes by wildlife; can regrow after limited grazing; robust taproot
– Appin Forage Turnip – bred for fast, vigorous establishment and quick maturity; firmly anchored in the ground for minimum waste; significantly higher proportion of leaf yield compared to other turnips; multi-crowned for improved re-growth potential; high leaf-to-bulb ratio; high digestibility
– Purple Top Turnip – provides both nutritious top growth as well as a large root for grazing
– Sunn Hemp – summer annual legume that can grow as tall as 6 feet; can produce a large cluster of nutritious leaves from a single stem; doesn’t require super high fertility to be established and productive; high potential for regrowth after grazing; nitrogen producer; first frost will end the growing season for sunn hemp
– Twister Brassica – a hybrid rapeseed x turnip cross; developed for forage and cover crop use; highly palatable green top; excellent in grazing mixes; can be combined with other brassica species, providing earlier forage than turnips or radishes; a great addition to wildlife food plots; whitetail deer prefer them earlier in the season
– Bayou Kale – a hybrid cross of rapeseed/kale; overwinters better than most other brassicas; produces a nice taproot surrounded by dense fibrous roots
