Spinosad for Organic Insect Control

Spinosad treats tent caterpillars

What is it?

Spinosad is a fermented microbial insecticide formulated from a bacteria that was discovered in soil.

What does it work on?

It works on many kinds of insects (caterpillars, flies, thrips, and beetles) but will not harm most beneficial insects.1

Spinosad is a highly effective control for bagworms, Fall webworms, tent caterpillars, Colorado potato beetles, and other listed pests. It will kill almost all caterpillars and small beetles but is NOT effective on soft-bodied insects or larger beetles like Japanese beetles.

(For Japanese beetle control, the most effective product is Spinosad Soap.)

Spinosad is listed for lawns, ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables, fruits, and citrus. Always read and follow the label (link below).

Note – Spinosad is harmful to bees when wet, but less harmful when dry, so don’t spray when they are active.
